My good friend Sasquatch 1 turned me on to this band Dust Congress. We took a trip down to Deep Ellum to see them perform with a trumpet player and it blew me away. I haven't been able to find any recordings with the trumpet player yet, but I did come across a performance they did recently on The Good Show on KTCU. I've packed all the tracks including the interview portion into a ZIP file for your downloading pleasure.

Speaking of centro-matic I came across this rare demo tape the other day. Non-Directional Jetpack Race is a cassette released in 1995 by Will "One Prolific Motherfucker" Johnson and his band centro-matic. I've always loved their earlier stuff so I pretty much adore this tape and had to share it with everyone. Not too much info I can find about it other than a post Will wrote on some forum back in 2003 commenting on the song "Fan in my Car":

Andy Huffstetler and I wrote it on a rainy assed Autumn night in 1991. It was the night that Magic Johnson was diagnosed with HIV to be exact. We drove to Bill's Records in his old Ford Taurus where I picked up Dinosaur Jr's "Whatever's Cool With Me" on cassette. We then went back to Denton, sat in his living room drinking some Glenfiddich scotch out of plastic tumblers, and wrote the song. I played acoustic and he sat on the edge of the couch and sang. It was written in about fifteen minutes.

I finally got to see these guys again at a tiny venue in Dallas this past week. I've must say that as good as their album is, it has absolutely nothing on their live show. I was fucking blown away by "Lazy Susan" live, it just seemed like the song had way more balls and grit live. I finally sat down and watched The Devil and Daniel Johnston last night and it left me with a head full of his songs. I can't recommend the film enough to everyone. It's painful to watch sometimes but I think it helps bring you into Daniel's world. I've embedded it below for those who haven't seen it. I've been doing my damndest to turn everyone who will listen on to Clark and Michael. This webshow from Michael Cera of Arrested Development and his buddy Clark Duke has got to be one of the funniest damn things I've seen in a long time. From Michael's latest blog entry:

Don't Forget to Breathe,
Hey guys. Wanted to say - almost 6 weeks ago now Episode 4 was put up on the website and since then I've been trying desperately to get mine and Clark's final cut of the episode posted. The main difference being that it now features an incredible song that we were fortunate enough to use - due solely to the generosity of one of our favorite bands, "Beulah."

I contacted Miles Kurosky of Beulah about a week prior to the episode being posted and he responded immediately. After a few email exchanges, he told us that we could use the song in the episode, despite the fact that we could in no way remunerate for such a gem. That said, I would have been heartbroken if we couldn't use the song, as it is absolutely perfect in the episode (I think) and it's also one of my favorite songs.

In summation, if you have any taste in music PLEASE go buy all of Beulah's albums, they are all musical massages. My endless thanks to Miles and Beulah for letting us use "Don't Forget to Breathe" in episode 4, and my endless thanks to those of you who are going to go out and stock up on Beulah music.

Not sure where I got this one but thought I'd share it. I'll let this guy explain...

I obtained this tape from a man (who shall remain nameless) who got it
from someone who owned a record store in Silver Lake. That man was given the 4-track tape by Beck in 1992. The title "Beck, Like the Beer"
appears on a piece of paper included with the tape, but that was the
only info. The two unknown songs are great pieces of early beck material. Accordin, and the last unknown track is a little noisy jam. According
to the man who gave me this, my CD copy is THE ONLY CD copy in existence! There are only a few other copies floating around and are all 4-tracks. Please enjoy "Beck, Like the Beer."

This is a demo tape that Grohl released way back in 1990 when he was still with Nirvana under the name "Late!". From Wikipedia

Though Grohl had been writing songs for several years, he declined to introduce his songs to the band for fear of damaging the band's chemistry. Instead, Grohl compiled his songs and recorded them himself, releasing a cassette called Pocketwatch in 1992 on indie label Simple Machines. Rather than using his own name, Grohl released the cassette under the pseudonym "Late!".

In the later years of Nirvana, Grohl's songwriting contributions increased. In Grohl's initial months in Seattle, Cobain overheard him working on a song called "Color Pictures of a Marigold", and the two ended up jamming on it. Grohl would later record the song for the Pocketwatch cassette. During the sessions for In Utero, he decided to re-record the song, and the band released this version as a b-side on the "Heart-Shaped Box" single, titled simply "Marigold".

Earlier, as the band worked on new material for In Utero, Grohl contributed the main guitar riff for what ended up becoming "Scentless Apprentice". Cobain conceded in a late 1993 MTV interview that he initially thought the riff was "kind of boneheaded", but was gratified at how the song developed (a process captured in part in a demo on the Nirvana box set With the Lights Out). Cobain noted that he was excited at the possibility of having Novoselic and Grohl contribute more to the band's songwriting.

Prior to their 1994 European tour, the band decided to schedule session time at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle to work on demos. For most of the three-day session, Cobain was absent, so Novoselic and Grohl worked on demos of their own songs. The duo completed several of Grohl's, including future Foo Fighters songs "Exhausted", "Big Me", "February Stars", and "Butterflies". On the third day of the session, Cobain finally arrived, and the band recorded a demo of a song later named "You Know You're Right". It was the band's final studio recording.

Someone over at SUF told me about these guys a year ago or so. They hail from Hong Kong, and they are now with Elefant Records. They have a new album in the works called "zoo is sad people are cruel". Here's two songs from their two previous albums. Whenever I hear the song "Little Banana" I always think of the scene in Bottle Rocket where the guy tells Owen Wilson he looks like a little banana.

Dan Arthurs

Do any of you have a CD that you treasure because you know that very few people have heard it? Dan Arthurs' "Your Stinky Pinky" is mine. I received this CD from my brother back in 1995. He told me he got it in the bargain bin of a small CD shop in New York. I've tried to contact Mr. Arthurs' several times to find out any info on current projects, but to no avail. I was searching around the other day and came across this picture of a Dan Arthurs playing mandolin in an Alt-Country band in Brooklyn in the early 90's called Tandy.

Too much of a coincidence? I don't know. Does anyone have any info on this guy or any info on Tandy? I'd love to know. Here are two of my favorite songs from "Your Stinky Pinky".

Terrene

I had an entirely different post planned for today but I came across this band that I just had to share with you. In 2004 Terrene recorded a demo and sent it to legendary producer Phil Ek(Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Stephen Malkmus). Apparently he was blown away and decided to help them record a full length version. Three years later the final record, "Indifferent Universe", has still not been released. John Dylan, the bands lead singer/guitarist, has been refining it into what he calls "a 42-minute mini-epic". The new release date is slated for 7/17/2007 on Wax Orchard, let's hope they get it out this time. Here are two tracks from the demo version of "Indifferent Universe".
